presentation of the City of Guatemala

Guatemala City is the capital of Guatemala (Central America). It is known for its Mayan history, its location in the highlands and nearby volcanoes. In the central Plaza Mayor, also known as the central park, the Metropolitan Cathedral is full of colonial paintings and religious carvings. The National Palace of Culture has a balcony overlooking the square. To the south of the city there are trails that lead to the active Pacaya volcano.

In Minerva Park, located to the north in Zone 2, is the relief map, a 3D map of Guatemala made in 1905. To the south, Zone 10 or Zona Viva is known for its lively nightlife. The Popol Vuh Museum exhibits works of Mayan and pre-Columbian art, colorful pottery and masks of traditional dances. Nearby is the Reformer's Tower, a steel structure that looks like the Eiffel Tower. To the west, the Kaminaljuyú archaeological park contains the ruins of a Mayan city, including pyramids and tombs. The National Museum of Ethnology and Archeology exhibits important findings of the site. The Aurora zoo houses native Guatemalan animals such as jaguars, tapirs and red macaws.
